POPULATION-BASED NURSING PRACTICE
FOR NURSES WORKING WITH
AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVE COMMUNITIES
This Southwest registered nurse public health training project focuses on developing culturally sensitive, linguistically appropriate interventions to improve the health and well being of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Through lessons learned from this training experience, the Pacific Public Health Training Center plans to expand this effort to California in 2008.

CALL FOR ENROLLMENT

Training Dates: August 19 -27, 2007
The Pacific Public Health Trainin Center and the UCLA School of Nursing would like to invite nurses and medical assistants working with American Indian/Alaska Native communities to participate in the first intensive summer course concerning population-based nursing practice to be offered at UCLA. Although nurses have long practiced in the community, a systematic approach to providing population-based care for individuals and families and for communities is relatively new.A total of 76 continuing-education hours of didactic and interactive instruction will allow nurses to uniquely address a problem that they identify as specific to their practice and community. Each student will develop a problem-based portfolio using population-based approaches with the goal of implementing and evaluating their plan in their home communities during the year following the course. Faculty will remain available for consultation as the plan unfolds. The course will enhance the theoretical underpinnings and skill set of nurse participants with the additional goal of improving the health of communities throughout the Southwest.

TRAVEL FUNDS AVAILABLE :
A limited number of travel awards will be available for non-California attendees. Travel funds will be awarded on an as needed basis. If you are not receiving funds from another source, please complete the attached application and return to Jeannie Martínez, UCLA School of Nursing.
Depending upon the number of requests submitted, some or all of your travel expenses may be reimbursed. All recipients will be advised of the Travel Award and the specific dollar amount in writing.
Travel reimbursement can only be made with original receipts. Please be sure to save all of your receipts for reimbursement. Receipts must be received by August 31, 2007. The payment time to receive a reimbursement is approximately 2 to 3 weeks. Travel reimbursements will be in the form of a UCLA check mailed to your home address.Link to application
HOUSING FEES:
UCLA Housing will be available at the DeNeve Plaza. Participants are responsible for their lodging and transportation costs.

  • Double occupancy per person with breakfast is $520 for 8 nights of accomodations.
  • Single occupancy with breakfast is $888 for 8 nights of accomodations.

UCLA Housing deadline will be extended until enrollment is complete.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION:
A Flyaway bus is available from Los Angeles International Airport to UCLA for $4.00 each way. The bus runs every half hour and will take you from the airport to UCLA parking Lot 32. From there you can catch the UCLA Express Campus bus that will take you to the dorms. Please see their website at http://www.lawa.org/flyaway/.
